In June, Birmingham City Council (BCC) Leader, Cllr Ian Ward spoke on industrial symbiosis at the Low Carbon City Mayor Dialogue alongside other major cities across the world as part of the 2021 International Energy Reform Forum.

The Leader kindly focused on the long standing relationship on this topic with International Synergies stemming back to 2002 and the birth of NISP®. He urged other cities to take a similar industrial symbiosis approach to help combat climate change and improve economies.

Other notable collaboration efforts between BCC and International Synergies have included hosting the first International Working Conference on Industrial Symbiosis in 2012 and, of course the G7 Alliance for Resource Efficiency Workshop on Industrial Symbiosis in 2015. We are currently working together on the Birmingham and Solihull Industrial Symbiosis programme (BASIS) and have with other European partners just completed an Interreg programme (through our not-for-profit arm), Transition Regions towards Industrial Symbiosis (TRIS).
