International Synergies NI has been delivering Northern Ireland’s longest-running zero waste programme for almost 20 years. Through industrial symbiosis and circular economy practices, the organisation helps businesses reduce waste, lower carbon emissions, create new market opportunities, and reduce operational costs.

The Role
We are seeking a proactive and business-focused Sustainable Business Practitioner to support the delivery of resource matching activities across Northern Ireland.
This role involves working directly with businesses from a wide range of sectors to identify innovative solutions for underutilised or wasted resources. You will help organisations reduce waste, improve sustainability performance, lower costs, and identify opportunities for material reuse through industrial symbiosis.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of the low-carbon green economy while supporting businesses on their journey towards Net Zero.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage directly with businesses across Northern Ireland
- Identify opportunities to reduce, repurpose, and reuse waste streams
- Support organisations in sourcing more sustainable products and materials
- Facilitate connections between businesses to enable resource sharing and reuse
- Gather and manage data relating to purchasing and waste activities
- Use ISL’s resource matching software and digital tools to identify opportunities
- Present on behalf of International Synergies NI at events, workshops, and conferences
- Build and maintain strong business relationships and networks
- Produce reports and maintain accurate records using Microsoft Office applications
- Manage project pipelines and deliver work against agreed targets
- Attend weekly online meetings and regular in-person meetings in Belfast
What We’re Looking For
- Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience in business engagement and customer relationship management
- Strong communication and networking skills
- Passion for sustainability, carbon reduction, and supporting businesses
- Ability to self-manage workload and work towards targets
- Understanding of environmental and climate-related business drivers
- Access to transport for travel across Northern Ireland
- Desirable Skills & Experience
- Qualification or background in engineering, energy, environmental science, or sustainability
- Knowledge of the circular economy, waste policy, and environmental regulations
- Experience identifying opportunities for material reuse and recovery
- Previous interaction with resource matching services
- Experience with onsite reuse, repair, or restoration practices
